Snow Covered World

Hyperbole starts off our morning.

"Whoa! The whole world is covered in snow, Papa!" Josiah exclaimed, standing on a chair peering out the kitchen window at the early arrival of Old Man Winter.

"Let's go outside!"

And so we did. Snow shovels cleared the driveway ("You shovel the big piles, I'll shovel the little ones."). Sleds were pulled ("Run, Papa, run!"). Snowball fights ensued ("I got you!"). Lots of laughter from both father and son. A couple of hours later, wet, tired and cold, we tromped inside our warm home, drank hot chocolate, and continued to enjoy each other's company.

The snowy morning almost encouraged me play Christmas music. Almost.

Afternoon Hike

Yesterday afternoon we trekked out into the bush for some quality time with the Sprouts and Nana and Pop.

Our explorations took us to the beaver dam, the location of which we still have to pinpoint on a map. The dam is quite high, taller than the Sprouts, the resulting lake (with beaver lodge in the distance) just below my eye (and camera) level.

We explored the immediate area a little more, discovering all sorts of interesting things, including deer antlers.

Pop and Jo hammed it up a little.

By the expression on this Sprout's face, this adventure was a success.

Canoe Ride

The lake was quite still yesterday, and the sun warm, so after school we gathered up the Sprouts and went for a family canoe ride.  For the Sprouts, it was a time to hang out with Mama and Papa.  For the adults, it was a time to get some fresh air, distance ourselves from the trials and tribulations of the school week, and put things into perspective.  For all of us, it was a time to enjoy the Creator's handiwork.  We paddled around the edge of the lake, exploring beaver, fish and duck habitats.  We glided through brown reeds and canoed past trees holding on to their last few leaves, noting that the season of autumn has been longer than usual  (last year there was snow on the ground), but feeling the chill in the air of Old Man Winter approaching.   Soon we will not be canoeing on the lake, but skating and ice fishing instead.
