Neys

2012 07 29 Neys Provincial Park

It's snowing again this afternoon. The older Sprout is sick, tucked in bed. Emily and Jo are in town, skiing. Winter is still here contrary to what the calendar tells us. In previous years we enjoyed "The Big Melt" in early March. Not this year. Sigh.

To warm up my heart I've been going through my Lightroom catalogue looking at pics of our family vacation from the previous summer. One of the family's favourite vacation spots is Neys Provincial Park. This beautiful park, a former POW camp, is nestled in a large boreal forest on the north shore of Lake Superior. It has a wide, sandy beach strewn with pieces of driftwood great for building forts and other structures. The camping sites are private, the park quiet. Sunsets are beautiful. Once in a while a long train will wind its way slowly along the edge of the lake. Merlins swoop and dive, hunting prey and dragonflies.

I can smell supper cooking over the campfire and hear the crashing of waves on the beach just thinking about it.

Boy, this has been a long winter...

Watch: Oliver Jeffers Author Film

Oliver Jeffers is one of the younger Sprout's favourite authors.  Repeatedly read for bedtime stories are Stuck and Lost and Found, as well as Jeffers' latest, This Moose Belongs to Me.  The stories are wonderfully created and written, providing a combination of humour and wonder.  It is very obvious that Oliver Jeffers gets to do what he loves.  Do you get to do what you love?

Making Rain

It started around 9:30 AM as a trickle. By 10 AM a drizzle, by noon a shower. My inbox was filling up with emails. I thought at first they were for my most recent upload (here), but when I checked the latest emails, it was for a picture I posted when I first signed up with 500px.com: "Making Rain". What!? I sifted through my emails until I read the following:

"Your photo Making Rain has appeared in Editor's Choice. Our sincere congratulations to you!"

It made my day.

Unfortunately, I couldn't see the Editor's Choice page until I came home after work as 500px is blocked at our school (and rightly so, as there are some NSFW photos on the site). It was the same feeling as when my photo "Orange" was published, waiting anxiously for the magazine to arrive in the mail weeks after the magazine came out.

I am blessed to have beautiful kids to photograph. And who let me photograph them. Although the oldest Sprout is re-negotiating her contract.
