Burp Starts With a B!
"Book starts with a b!" "So does bat!" "And ball ... butterfly ... blueberries ... bingo ... barn ... bread ... badger ... bee (giggle - bee starts with a b - get it, papa?) ... bottle ... bubble ... bugs..."
JK loves the alphabet. He will say a number of words that all start with the same letter, then ask us (especially his big sister) to participate and help out when he can't think of any new words. After we have brainstormed some more words, we will go on to other tasks, later hearing JK shout from elsewhere in the house (or yard or in the car) things like "Burp starts with a b!" This even happens when he is using the necessary (see next post). Imagine being with him in a public washroom when he shouts out, "Poop starts with a p!"

"I Can't Hear It"
Our weekly car trips to town and back again involve listening to and singing songs of all sorts. The CD's are mixes of musical styles and genres that reflect our individual tastes in music so that all in the car can enjoy the trip. For a few months since the previous summer the first request out of JK's mouth had been "7 8 9" by BNL, but lately he has moved beyond his love of that song and now just askes for any music to be played. I still think "7 8 9" is his favourite song (when quietly counting to 10, he will suddenly burst out with the phrase "What about 9?" in homage to the song), but it's wonderful that he is learning to appreciate a diversity of music. Now, when in the car, we quietly hear from the back seat, "I can't hear it", JK's subtle way of telling us to turn up the volume already.
Yesterday's trip included JK singing along to children's songs by the likes of Fred Penner and Jack Grunsky, especially giggling along with "Down by the Bay" ("a bear combing his hair!"), but also belting out phrases from other songs like "If I Had a Million Dollars" (BNL) and "I Hope" (Dixie Chicks). JK picks up on the repeated phrases and sings them, which not only helps develop his pitch, but strengthens his vocabulary as well. We need to just continue to help him learn to better pronounce his "l" sounds, for "If I Had a Million Dollars" comes out as "If I Had a Miwwion Dowwars".

Mischievous
mis·chie·vous /ˈmisCHivəs/ Adjective
1. (of a person, animal, or their behavior) Causing or showing a fondness for causing trouble in a playful way
If you look up mischievous in the dictionary, along with the word's definition you would find a picture of our youngest Sprout. There is no doubt in anyone's mind when they see that glint in JK's eye that he will be "showing a fondness for causing trouble" as soon as your back is turned. We knew it was time to cut short a grocery shopping errand at Walmart today when he popped open a bottle of dish soap and proceeded to spray the green, goopy liquid over the rest of the groceries in the shopping cart. I was always amused by Calvin's antics when I read my favourite comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, but little did I know then that someday I would be raising a Calvin of my own.

News Travels Fast
A parent of one of my students came by today during school hours to drop off a form for his son. As he handed it to me, he asked, "How is your little boy?" It took me a moment to realize that he was asking about JK (like I have other sons!). I was surprised by the question as I wondered how did he know about JK? (though I shouldn't have wondered, as news travels fast in a small community, especially about "visiting" teachers). I answered, "He's doing well. We are watching him closely." The parent went on to say, "If there is anything your family needs, let us know."
I almost cried at that point.
(But I didn't - you know how students can be if a teacher cries. Especially a male teacher.).
I thanked him twice for his offer of help.
There are times when this community frustrates and confounds me greatly, but it certainly knows how to show concern, care and support when needed.

Christmas is Early This Year
Setting: just after 4 PM as the family is exiting the school. Picture lots of snowflakes falling. Picture a little sprout running around, trying to catch snowflakes on his tongue, all the while shouting: "It's Christmas, it's Christmas!"
This is the same little sprout who for the past three weeks has been asking to put up the Christmas tree.

Sous-Chef
Setting: Kitchen
Cue background music: "Curious George" Soundtrack (or as JK likes to say: "George Curious")
I heard a voice from the table ask "Can I watch?" as I was putting a knob of butter in the pan. I said "Sure!", and JK pulled up the stool to stand beside me. He first wanted to watch the butter melt in the pan, but was soon side-tracked when I started to chop the carrots, cauliflower and broccoli that were to be steamed. "Oh no, Papa, the butter is all melted and I missed it!" JK was a little upset, so distraction is in order. "Here, put these dirty utensils in the sink." "Ok, Papa."
Splash!
"All done, Papa". "Good, now please put these veggies in the steamer." In go the carrots, which are steamed first (five minutes later the cauliflower, then five more minutes add the broccoli. Toss with butter, salt and pepper). "Looks good, Papa!" Leftover rice goes in the buttered pan, give a stir, then add the garlic and fresh ground pepper (plus some lemon juice, then later a little more butter). "I like your lemon rice, Papa. Can I wash these (the tongs)?" "No, I need those to take out the pork tenderloin (with an olive oil, garlic, pepper, salt and thyme rub, seared in a hot pan, then cooked for 20 minutes in a 400 degree oven. Let stand for 10 minutes.)."
In walks EK from her afternoon run. "Mama! I'm helping Papa cook supper!" Big grin on my three year old's face as he says it. Big grin on my face as I hear it. I love being a Papa.
